On 23–24 November at its headquarters in Hamburg, European XFEL hosted the EIROforum Directors General Autumn Assembly. The event brought together the leaders of the eight major international research organizations that constitute EIROforum, a collaboration that supports the advancement of scientific research in Europe and advises the European Union on science policy.

As current chairman of the EIROforum Council, European XFEL Managing Director Massimo Altarelli welcomed the leaders of the other seven research organizations: CERN, the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), the European Space Agency (ESA), the European Southern Observatory (ESO), the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF), EUROfusion, and the Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL).

The meeting included a tour of the European XFEL facility in Schenefeld. Altarelli said: “The directors of the largest European research organisations are experienced in large scale scientific projects; they were quite impressed by the size of our experiment hall, the experiment hutches, and above all by the photon tunnels and the equipment there.”
